I study Materials Science Engineering, and I’m now doing internship at a startup company supported by the Impact Centre at UofT. The start up is called iMerciv, and we are designing a device that helps blind people to be more independent. I’ve been working there for 2 weeks and so far my role has been to help them choosing which kind of plastics they should use, as well as doing a little bit of market research, and I’m enjoying it! My only concern is that my supervisor gives me very open ended tasks, so sometimes I feel a little lost, but after a short conversation I understood that he wants to give me “space” to develop my own way of doing things, which is cool. I personally like the start up environment and I hope to learn more about business, which I wouldn’t have the chance to do in my regular engineering courses.
